What is an APK file?

Android application package or in short APK is the file format used for installing applications on the android operating system. These Android applications include mobile apps as well as middleware. It works similar to .exe file extensions on Windows operating system or Deb packages in Debian-based operating systems like Ubuntu. APK files can have any name but it should end with APK file extension. It is basically extended from JAR and ZIP file formats. Though it is easy to install the app via APK file but by default, this is usually locked in an Android device for security reasons. One need to allow the installation from unknown sources in the settings menu.

What is it made up of?

APK file is made up of unified group programs designed for functioning in the Android operating system. Usually, APK contains resources, certificates, assets, and manifest file. It is a special type of archive file similar to the zip format packages that is based on the JAR file format.

Reasons to opt the app installation via APK files

  • Perhaps, the biggest reason for installing apps through APK file is the unavailability of apps on the Google Play Store. There are many useful Android apps that are not available on Google Play Store such as VidmateAPK, SB game hacker APK, etc.
